A theodolite is a precision surveying instrument used to measure horizontal and vertical angles.
1. Set up the tripod
Place the tripod over the survey point.Spread the legs firmly and press them into the ground.Adjust the tripod so the head is approximately level.
2. Mount the theodolite
Secure the instrument to the tripod using the mounting screw.Ensure it is tightly fastened.
3. Center the instrument
Position the theodolite directly above the survey marker using the optical plummet or plumb bob.Adjust the tripod legs until the instrument is centered.
4. Level the theodolite
Use the foot screws to center the circular bubble.Then use the plate level (or electronic level on digital models) for precise leveling.Repeat until the bubble remains centered when the instrument is rotated.
5. Focus the telescope
Adjust the eyepiece until the crosshairs appear sharp.Aim at the target and adjust the focusing knob until the image is clear.
Check for parallax by moving your eye slightly; if the crosshairs appear to move relative to the target, refocus.
6. Set the horizontal angle
im the telescope at your reference point.Set the horizontal angle to 0°00′00″ (or note the current reading if you are not zeroing it).
7. Measure the angle
Rotate the telescope to the second target.Lock the horizontal motion.
Use the fine adjustment screw to align the crosshairs precisely.Read and record the horizontal angle.
8. Measure the vertical angle
Tilt the telescope to the desired target.Lock the vertical motion.
Use the fine adjustment screw for precise alignment.Read and record the vertical angle.
9. Repeat for accuracy
Professional surveyors usually measure each angle twice:Once with the telescope in the normal (face left) position.
Once after reversing the telescope (face right).Average the readings to reduce instrument errors.
